Secret Avengers is by far the best book with ‘Avengers’ in the title. In fact I will one up that statement, it is the only one you should be reading (Dark Avengers is really a Thunderbolts book with a cruel marketing gimic).
If you’re new to comics then you’ve in for a treat because you are about to learn what the rest of us know. Rick Remender f&@*ing rules. The dude can spin a yarn that leaves you hanging breathless for the next page and his current run on Secret Avengers is no different.
This issue focuses on Venom, Valkyrie and Hawkeye as they battle against Max Fury and the new Masters of Evil. The entire issue is action-packed but at the same time we get excellent dialogue and a brilliant story to boot. The pacing is wonderful as the book practically reads itself right up until the stunning conclusion.
Next month when ‘the Abyss’ tries to take hold of the team we are in for a treat, there is so much to like about this book right now. To see Venom as a part of this team brings me great joy and Hawkeye is written wonderfully in this issue as well. Remender really nails the characterization, making this an approachable book to newer readers.
Matteo Scalera on pencils and Matthew Wilson on colour art produce some of the best work I’ve seen so far this week. The panels are excellent, the detailing beautiful and some of the roaring adventure never gets out of hand. The fight scenes are rendered perfectly and the chase scene, a hard one to pull off in comics, is fantastic.
I’m really looking forward to the next issue of one of my favourite books. This is the level on which every other ‘Avengers’ title should strive to reach. Superhero comic book fans this is a must-read series. And don’t sleep on Remender either, dude can tell one hell of a good story.
