Each week we will be bringing you our top 5 Staff Picks and top 3 covers.  Not just what’s been hyped or what catches us as “Ooh, shiny!”, but what we ourselves would buy if we had the money.  Remember, if WE are willing to put down our hard-earned money for it, we hope everyone else will, too, because at heart we are still fans ourselves.

In case you want to play at home, we are making our picks from the Diamond Previews website.  The list for this week can be found here.

Staff Picks

1. AGE OF ULTRON #1

PublisherMARVEL COMICS
(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Bryan Hitch
For years the heroes of the Marvel Universe have lived in fear that the artificial intelligence known as Ultron would one day evolve to fulfill its desire to wipe out all organic life and take over the Earth — that day has arrived. This massive 10-part Marvel Universe-spanning event is brought to you by Eisner award-winning writer Brian Michael Bendis and comics legend Bryan Hitch.
Brian Michael Bendis has been dominating the Staff Picks the last few weeks, and now he’s brought Bryan (Ultimates) Hitch on board to take over the entire Marvel U!  (psst) What’s that? (psst psst) Oh…I see.  Folks, Tyler has just informed me it is Ultron who’s planning to take over the Marvel universe, not Mr. Bendis.  Phew! That’s much less scary.
2. SEX #1

(W) Joe Casey (A/CA) Piotr Kowalski
FIRST ISSUE – COLLECTOR’S ITEM! Finally, a good reason for you come in the comicbook store — to buy SEX! Simon Cooke has retired from his own “alternative lifestyle” and returned to the city he’d previously sworn to protect. Now he’s just another average citizen — or is he? The term “adult” has never been so appropriate as it is when it applies to SEX.
What? A Joe Casey penned comic in a Staff Picks list?  You guys and gals are in for a treat!  If you’ve never read any of Joe Casey’s other comics like Butcher Baker, Wildcats version 3.0, or his Uncanny X-Men run which ran parallel to Grant Morrison‘s New X-Men, you are missing out.   His work on Wildcats is arguably better than Alan Moore’s run on the same title.  If that isn’t a recommendation, we don’t know what is.
3. MARA #3

(W) Brian Wood (A/CA) Ming Doyle
story BRIAN WOOD
art MING DOYLE & JORDIE BELLAIRE
cover MING DOYLESeeing her friends and supporters abandon her, and instead of trying to suppress her newfound powers, Mara goes public.  Openly displaying her rapidly developing abilities, she challenges the bias and discrimination.  People start to see her as not a freak, but rather someone who can’t be stopped, and that starts to make a lot of very serious people very concerned.  Socially-aware superheroics in a world we’ve never seen.  Brian Wood, Ming Doyle, and Jordie Bellaire bring the goods.

I think the solicitation put it best “Socially-aware superheroics in a world we’ve never seen.”  If there is a better reason to pick up this book, we can’t think of it.  Oh…yes we can.  Three reasons: Brian Wood, Ming Doyle, and Jordie Bellaire.  These three are bigger stars than Mara.
